Autumn...
I love this time of year. I love the colours, the sharp slant of sunlight on the trees, mosaics of acid-yellow and harts-
blood, velvet and
darkness and a haze of mist-grey over the hills. I love its immanence, its mellowness, the tang of frost just around the
corner of the
year...
Watching the little birds in the goat-willow in my garden, I realised something more.
I love this land with a fierce, possessive love, deep-rooted in two thousand years of history. From the frosted beaches
and cloud-brushing peaks of the north to the wind-haunted meanderings of the rivers of the east, from the sensuous
rolling patchworked hills of
the south to the demanding dark moors of the west, this land seeps into bone and blood and synapse, mother of
motley nobility,
culture, individual freedoms. It can be known. It can be understood. It can be felt deep inside.
I love its effortless eccentricities, its vigour and vibrancy, its flawed perfections, its silent strength and tenacious
resilience, its hard-won tolerances and intense and variable beauty, the profound energy in its sacred mythical
landscape.
Home and more-than-home, the forces that shape and protect and bind, in me, as I am in the land. Love returning love
in the stillness
for those who'll only take the time to listen...

(in no particular order)
plit popints - n. Typo for 'plot points' typed on a keyboard with more than half the characters worn off...
[PING] (alt [ping]) - n. A brainwave. The text equivalent of a lightbulb going on blindingly over someone's head. Usually mine. And usually at the most inconvenient of times. [sigh]
TPTB - The Powers That Be.
wulmet - n. A person of little or no talent who somehow inveigles himself into a position where he is in power over other, far more talented people and uses his position to downplay them in order to try to make himself feel superior.
biteable - referring to an anatomical part vb, tasty.
Flatterfed - vb. 27.02.08: my typo for flattered, but since it's so cutely apt I thought it would fit nicely
here. Lutra defined it as "the lovely warm feeling of satisfaction resulting from enthusiastic reviews..." (which I've been
getting for my MB fics).
Composted - vb, 'compos mentis', mentally capable of working. Contrast with
uncomposted or non-
composted, not 'compos mentis', not capable of working, hungover...
Cumbles - n, cucumbers.
Kewp - how Ken says 'thank you'. We rather like Lutra's 'nanx', too...
Musekick - noun, music, without which I cannot work.
'feinne - noun, caffeine, essential for correct mental functioning, especially first thing in the morning. I
prefer mine in the
form of SodaStream Diet Coke. And on that subject...
Skoosh - verb, noun. To skoosh - to add CO2 to a sodastream bottle filled with water to make it
fizzy, prior to adding
Diet Coke syrup (or just drinking as sparkling water). A skoosh - a bottle of water that has been skooshed. Skooshy
- something that
has been skooshed, water, or that whipped cream that comes in tins you have to shake then upend and press the
nozzle...
Shoogle - verb. To shake gently, for example, of roast potatoes in a roasting tin to ensure they're
covered with oil. I
have vague memories of this being a real Scottish colloquialism...
Stegasaurus - n, spider of the genus tegenaria. Why? No idea. I just find it easier, that's
all...
Edit 08.09.07: Lutra thinks that Brian is a good name for a mini-stegasaurus. From now on, any 'Brian's in the posts
may be assumed to be a tegenaria. Except where otherwise specified.
Viterals - noun, vitamins + minerals. Also a pun on victuals.
Splish - verb. A combination of slosh and splash.
Parrots - noun, paracetemol (from the old joke "Why are there no aspirin tablets in the jungle?
Because the parrots eat
'em all...")
Maggles - noun, magpies. As opposed to non-magical people.
Flamewings - noun. Swifts. So called because the first time we became aware of them was an early
summer evening
when they were flying high, the light from the setting sun seemingly turning their wings to flames. Lovely little birds. We
always know
summer's arrived when we hear their high-pitched squeeing.
Murfs - noun, moths.
Peasant cut - noun, roughly cut up into big chunks, e.g. vegetables chopped in a hurry for a
hearty stew or
soup. By extension, anything prepared in a hurry - haircut, material, even a first draft of a story...
Giraffe - noun, a carafe (of wine, coffee or water, for example).
Shrumps - noun, mushrooms.
Splings - noun, Kai's spelling homework: by extension, any spelling.
Tyops - noun, typos. var toyps, typso, psyto, psoyt, etc. Usual result of a dose of the
fingerials (see next
entry).
Fingerials - (pr. fin GEEE ree yalls) noun, fingers that will not type what you want
them to.
Haddock - noun, time, of which I never have enough. (Origin of this term here.)
Sleep - noun? vb? a.k.a. sheeeeeeeeep.... I used to know what this word
meant...

So what is it with the
haddock? Am I some kind of fish freak?
I'll leave that to
others to decide.
The tale (or tail if you prefer) harks back
to October 2000, when my GoodTwin and I, ably assisted by Sue,
ran the first UK Professionals convention...
It's common
knowledge that I never have enough time, and I was determined
not to bewail the fact that weekend: hence I promised not to use the
'T' word...
Of course, that didn't really work (if nothing else I
had to let the trainees know what times things were supposed to be
happening!) so we decided a substitute word would be employed
instead. There were several suggestions. Banana came very close to
being chosen. However, I eventually decided that 'haddock' fitted
the bill nicely. Ever since, haddock=time. Hence the title of my forthcoming
autobiography,
My Half-Life in the Haddock
Space Continuum....
Normally I wouldn't, but these
were just irresistible...

Leap Year!
Happy Leap Day (if that's what it's called...)
Saturday was just fabulous! Hysterically funny: stomach was hurting from laughing by the end of the day. [GLOMPS Sue and GoodTwin] Thank you so much, it was fantastic!
I now have RiD volumes 4, 5 and 6 (have been itching to read 4, Starscream's change of spark and Megatron's return - brilliant stuff!), Snuff Box, and Michael Talbot's Holographic Universe: been dying to read this one for a while!
On Sunday Kai had his first venesection session. It went quickly, but he felt awful at the end, dizzy and sick. We got lots of liquid into him and a couple of digestive snack bars, and after half an hour he was much better and we got the bus home. Nurse said next time, if he likes, they'll give him fluids while the blood is being taken, should help.
She also told us that the iron overload might be why he is feeling so fatigued and ugh all the time: apparently that's a recognised symptom. He feels OK today, so we'll see how we go. I need to make an appt for him for three weeks time for the second session.
Managed to tackle the bathroom. It's more of a disguise than an actual upgrade, but it looks nicer as far as I'm concerned. And it's a lot cleaner!

It's been a Monday where if it could be a hassle, it was. Irritating, and I haven't managed to get much done, so tomorrow's going to be very busy...

It's been a fun birthday. Opened presents (Time Trumpet, Scooby Doo and Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery - more on that further down - and Matt Berry's first album Opium, which I shall listen to as soon as I've ripped it, and a wonderful Tf fridge magnet!) English breakfast (made with sossijs from the butcher in Sandy Park Rd - the new one. Haven't been there in years, not since Kai fell ill, but now he's not on a restricted diet any more I'm going to start buying there again. Fantastic pork chops, and the sossijs... oh, proper sossijs, meat, no cereal, fabulously tasty...), then Ken and I went to Keynsham to check the charity shops. Found a Red Arrows display DVD, and The Lake House, which I keep catching bits off but have never seen the whole thing. As you know, I don't usually do chickflicks but Keanu Reeves is my guilty pleasure...
Ostrich steak with chips, peas and grilled tomato for dinner, with crème brúlée for dessert, then the last ep of Undermind... well, the start was promising, but the end was about the most anticlimactic and disappointing I've ever watched. Such a pity.
But then we watched Scooby Doo and Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery. Which is fabulous! Gloriously silly, lots of laughs, enormous fun. It does borrow very heavily from Kiss meets the Phantom of the Park but is much better. Thoroughly enjoyable, and one to watch again!
Opium is pleasant enough, but he really only has a couple of tunes. He's quite inventive in using them, but it's all a little samey...
Tired now though. GoodTwin and Sue are coming to visit tomorrow, so really looking forward to that!

... ooops...
I've spent a week downsizing and upgrading. Only in a small way (well, there's been the deep-cleaning, which is tiring, takes a long time and is hard on the hands, but very satisfying), but I love the difference. Another bookcase has been cleared and gone, giving us more space, and I finally got rid of the bacteria magnets that were the old dish drainer and sponge holder. Replaced them with good quality stainless steel: looks dead snazzy and is so much easier to clean and keep hygienic.

In other news: Kai's still struggling with bugs, but he passed his exams with pretty good marks. In fact, he got 100% on the viva (the oral computer exam), which startled him and pleased everyone. He's been for several walks, by himself as well as with me and Ken, and is looking pretty good at the moment. Dr prescribed a special shampoo which has sorted out the eczema-type problem he had with his scalp, and that seems to have solved the redness on his face too. Very pleased about that, as we weren't looking forward to having to see a dermatologist.
After a year of looking I finally found a replacement for my 20-year old + bodywarmer (on amazon, of course). Black, warm waterproof, and so many pockets. Pockets on pockets, pockets within pockets... it's made of pockets and holds everything! But - as I only realised when I caught sight of myself in a window - it looks rather like a police security vest.
... not sure if that's a good thing or not...
My BP is still too high and I've been told it has to be better in three months (when I go for another check up) or I'm going to have to take a third medication. Not at all chuffed about that. Have started eating more fruit and switched from coffee to green tea, which is supposed to help. And getting more exercise too. Things should start improving once I can get the greenhouse on the go again - picked up a windowsill propagator yesterday (the ones I already have are too wide for the kitchen window shelf now we have the blind there) and have got tomatoes and cucumbers on the go.
We've been watching Undermind - Yule present, there were three missing ep summaries on the IMDb, which is all the excuse I need to get something! - and mostly enjoying it. It's rather leisurely, and very very low budget, and the acting is a little stilted, but it's 1964 (B&W) so we're making allowances...
Agents of SHIELD in twenty minutes. Cracking stuff!

Manic week again. Got a lot done though.
A couple of weeks ago I had Sains meat counter make us a pizza - 10", deep crust, fully loaded, all four meats (chicken, ham, pepperoni and chilli beef). The beef was a little overwhelming, so I asked them today if they could just put half the amount on.

Ken suggested I carry a bag of Darwin Awards around with me to hand out. Tempting. I'd run out in a day though.
After dinner we watched Pan on FIlmFLex. Fun, very pretty, a bit derivative, but a fine film to unwind with after a week like we've had. And in 25 mins it's Agent Carter S2E3!

Quick update...
I bought a webcam (a little cheapie, all I could find locally) and a mic from Wilko a week ago, and this morning finally managed to get everything set up and working. After 15 (16?) years of friendship on ICQ/skype, Lutra and I finally saw and spoke to each other for the first time!
It was wonderful! Didn't talk for long - her cubs were watching films, and I had to make brunch before Kai and I went out for a walk - and the video and audio quality is of course not perfect, but it was fantastic. Planning to do it again Tuesday, with the aim of making it easier to write together.
Better get that new first chapter of the Leander project drafted!

I think I've finally just about finished the spring cleaning (YAY!).
Shed next. Oh joy.
We've finished Agents of SHIELD season 1 and are half way through season 2 - it's terrific! I also took a couple of hours last week to watch Atonement... mm. Excellent, extraordinary film, but heart-rending and very depressing. Maybe. Depends on how you view it. Not K&K's sort of thing though.
I've also now read through The Complete AllSpark Almanac and it's fantastic. New characters include Depthcharge and Cheetor from Beast Wars, Chromia and Drift from IDW, and Sideswipe (from every continuity), and a completely new Maccadam's menu.
Old:
New. Includes Swerve, the owner of Swerves on board the Lost Light (MTMTE), Rung the eternal psychiatrist, and Knock Out from TF:Prime.

Finally got to start swimming again yesterday. If I get there at 7 am I have time for a decent swim before getting back to wake Kai at 8 to get in for his first lecture at 10. Only managed 8 lengths, and my arms and ribs are aching today, but it's been two months since I last went so that's not too bad. Will aim to go every Monday: it's a great start to the week!
Now the serious upgrading of the BCP site begins. I also need to tackle JAT, but not quite sure what to do with it... Labels: busyness, drama, swimming, Transformers
