Well, we're back...
Actually, we've been back for about an hour, but were hungry so had some dinner first. Pizza for Kai and duck ramen for me - it's junk-food Friday.
So, not knowing what would constitute the interview, and at Kai's request, we tried a sort of casual role play, asking him some of the standard questions, like, 'why do you want to go to the college?', and 'what do you think are your talents and skills?', figuring that if nothing else it made him
think, and that would be useful no matter what.
We arrived at John Cabot in plenty of time, and off he went to the waiting area with the 'guardian' fifteen minutes before his interview slot while I found a seat outside and waited. It was nerve-wracking, until about four minutes into his allotted time, when I suddenly felt calm and relieved. That was about the time Kai discovered that it wasn't going to be a question-and-answer type interview but something much more fun...
He enjoyed it! He was asked to explain how a kinetically-powered torch works - and wouldn't you know it, we bought one for Yule? - then choose four pictures out of a selection and explain
why he chose them: his were a suspension bridge (because whoever first came up with the idea was brilliant and he loves making things like that), a bee with a microchip (because he's fascinated by the idea of cybernetics), a silicon chip (because he likes them!), and a set of drawing instruments (because he enjoys drawing). Finally, he had to choose a pencil case and explain his choice: he went for the tin one, saying it was sturdy, easy to see and select the pencils you needed, and he preferred function over design (as in appearance). [proud grin] Bright sprog!
He's done the best he can, and feels happy with his performance, and that's all we can ask. Thank you everyone, from Kai and me, for all the good wishes, crossed fingers and positive 'fluences - I
know it all helped. Though we'd appreciate it if you could all still keep virtual fingers crossed: I don't know how or when the college makes the selections...
We dropped into
Modelmania on the way home, and he bought himself a Hornby 45 ton steel carrier model from his pocket money. Back in town we dived into Wilkinson's (I had a £5 gift voucher as a thank you for doing one of those extensive consumer surveys a month or so ago): they'd had a delivery of new kitchen storage containers and I found one that's perfect for nori! (£1.99 too, a pound cheaper than the one I had been planning to get.) With that, some shampoo for Quyn, and a buy-one-get-one-free offer on facial wipes, I only had to pay 23p at the till. Chuffed? Oh yes.
We dropped into the Chinese supermarket - on the way in, since I didn't know how late it stayed open - and picked up nori, Pocky (apparently, sharing his Pocky when he takes a packed lunch makes Kai very popular...) and ramen. But they had no sushi rice, dammit! I only have enough for this weekend. And we didn't have the time/energy to try the other Chinese supermarket, at Montpelier. [grumble] Will have to get into town again soon.
Ken's gone to pick up the
Fantastic 4 DVD to rent, and we shall collapse in front of the TV for a few hours. I think it's deserved tonight!
