[happy sigh] Well that was fun.
First, Ken's had a good day, I think. He's taken it easy, got some work on the books done, we had steak/mushrooms/mixed veg and the chocolate cake I bought for his birthday. Then we watched DVDs (of which more in a mo). He says thanks to everyone for the good wishes and cards (laughed at the candles, Carol, and loved the Celtic card, onna).
I've finished
OotP (well, actually I finished it at 3.30 am yesterday) - it's fantastic. Wonderfully detailed, densely layered - Rowling's just getting better and better. Can't wait for the next one!
OK, films... Ken said he fancied something mindless, sci-fi-ish, with plenty of gratuitous violence.
Most unusual for him, but I like that on occasion too. So off Kai and I toddled to the rental shop (finally got the name,
Phoenix - probably because it's had at least three different incarnations as a video/DVD rental place!) to see what they had, and came back with
A Series of Unfortunate Events and
Alien versus Predator. I went up for a nap after dinner, while Kai and Ken watched
Unfortunate Events: I simply cannot
abide Jim Carrey, as far as I'm concerned he's the most unfunny 'actor' in the world, marginally ahead of Julian Clary. Then after Kai had gone to bed, Ken and I settled down to watch
AvP.
Now,
Aliens [argh! later edit -
Alien I mean!!] is perhaps the scariest film I've ever seen - dated and sfx-primitive as it is it still raises shivers up my back. I also thoroughly enjoyed
Predator, though I always wished the eponymous hero had managed to kill Schwartzenegger (however you spell it, I can't be bothered to check), another so-called 'actor' I don't like. But I had no illusions that putting the two together was likely to be complete crap.
So it thoroughly startled me when I found myself really
enjoying the film! Yes, the basic premise is plain daft, the film borrows heavily from
The Cube (one of the nastiest films I've seen, in both its versions), but... The acting's pretty good, (Lance Henriksen, Bishop in the
Alien series, is one of my favourite actors. He was also in
The Terminator, of course), the cg excellent, the setting fun - and I absolutely
loved the ending. Ken's not sure he wants Kai to see it, but I think sprog will really like it - what do you bet he sees the incredibly positive cross-species cooperation and respect that had me grinning happily and which Ken
completely missed?
It's one I want to get to keep. I'm not going to recommend it to everyone because it won't be to a lot of people's tastes, and it
is very violent (though in a very comic-book way), but for what I expected to be a mindless bit of fluff - um... yeah, what the hell, I'll use the term here, I think it's fitting - it's surprisingly engaging. And I really want there to be a sequel, and how often do I say that?
... wonder how much a hunter tattoo would cost...?
